Museum volunteer

We're looking for volunteers to help join our Front of House museum team as they welcome visitors to the Mary Rose museum.

Working within the galleries, you will engage and support a diverse range of visitors, sharing facts about the ship and its collection and helping to bring the museum experience to life.  You will also have the opportunity to volunteer alongside our Events Team and support our Learning Centre Team.

Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet new people of all ages, so whether you are a student or retired, everyone is welcome!

As part of our training scheme you will undergo an initial induction, shadow an existing volunteer, and full support and ongoing training will also be provided.

Family Activity Volunteer

As a member of our enthusiastic team of Mary Rose volunteers, you will support our visitor experience by delivering family activities and workshops based in our Learning Centre one weekend per month and during school holidays

While no previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we hope you will have an interest in working with children and young people, are creative, and have an enthusiasm for engaging with others.  You will have the confidence and ability to talk to family groups and to supervise fun, hands-on activities.   There may be an opportunity to plan and develop family activities and workshops in the future.

We give a full museum, health and safety and security induction to new volunteers

Each year we organise an extensive training program which volunteers take part in to refresh their knowledge which will include Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training

We ask for a minimum of one day a week during school holidays (between 11:00 – 4pm) and one day, one weekend a month

To apply for the role, please contact us via [email protected] and we will arrange a date for you to come in for an interview for the role.  Once an interview is completed, we will then require two references for you before you can start.

Mary Rose Information Group Speaker

Part time/On demand

We want to share the history of the Mary Rose with as many people as possible, but not everyone can make it to Portsmouth. The Mary Rose Information Group is a group of volunteer speakers who give talks on the Mary Rose to U3A, Probus Clubs, historical societies and other interested groups.

Our aim is to have speakers all around the country so we can share the history of the ship and her crew with as many communities as possible. We are always on the lookout for new speakers so why not join them?

Talks can be requested for any day of the week and at various times, but you will have the opportunity to decide whether or not you can fit it into your schedule.

We will provide you with a standard PowerPoint presentation to help you get started, which you would be welcome to add to with your own research as you learn more.

Depending on bookings, you may only do 1 or 2 talks a month. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Interested in volunteering?

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with us, are aged over the age of 16 and available from 09:45am-17:30 for at least one day each week we would like to hear from you.
