SEND

All our workshops listed are already accessible to pupils with Special Educational Needs but please contact us to discuss specific requirements for your group.

Our team will always try to encourage and support your pupils to make them feel welcome, safe and engaged. Many SEND schools prefer sessions focused on object handling which we are happy to accommodate, and we can also make adjustments to the timetable to help with pupil engagement.

We have a number of accommodations we can make to our sessions including:

  • A slide show available to download from our website which shows how the day works and what to expect. We hope this alleviates some of the worries an anxious pupil may have about visiting an unfamiliar place.
  • A break-out space outside the classroom and easy access to outdoor space.
  • Packs which have activities designed to help de-escalate difficult emotions are available if needed and we can provide lanterns and ear defenders in the Museum where there are low levels of light and/or sound effects.
  • Human remains are on display in the Museum and a skeleton of the ship’s dog. We can always take another route around the Museum if you would prefer to avoid these.
  • Relaxed Opening Mornings are held once a month if you have pupils who find the dark difficult; please check our website for details and dates.
  • The Museum has a 1545 experience which gives you the sensation of sinking and a 4D cinema which gives you the sensation of diving underwater. These can be avoided or easily exited if pupils would like to try but find them overwhelming.

The Mary Rose Museum aims to be an accessible place for all.
