In a small store on the orlop deck, we found the remains of a man we believe was the Purser. He was trapped here when the ship sank, along with his chest, which held a large number of gold and silver coins.
The ship’s purser ranked just below the master. His duties included paying and mustering the crew, keeping accounts of stores, buying supplies and issuing food and drink according to the ration list. He was also responsible for giving out clothing and for the safekeeping and distribution of lanterns and candles.
This man was not physically active. He had suffered with a childhood condition called bilateral Perthes disease, which affected his hips and leg bones. As a result, he stooped and had trouble walking.
