Scanning the Mary Rose

On the 17th and 18th September visitors will have the opportunity to watch our team carry out laser and structured light scanning as well as photogrammetry inside the Weston Ship Hall, which will be used to create detailed 3D models of the hull of the Mary Rose.

Understanding the structure of the hull and how it is changing over time is crucial for planning the long-term conservation strategy and ensuring stability. Scans of the hull can help us understand how she operated and where the crew would have been positioned when she was in active service.

This is in collaboration with the University of Southampton and Stockholm University

  • Members of the Mary Rose conservation and archaeology team will be in the galleries to speak to people about the work being done
  • Members of the Coastal and Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility at the University of Southampton will also be available to talk about the laser scanning technique, how it is applied to the Mary Rose, and other marine archaeological projects they work on.
