Sword hanger

This leaded brass sword hanger was recovered from the upper deck of the Mary Rose.

Designed to lie flat against a leather garment (not preserved), the two decorative loops would have held a leather strap, (only fragments preserved) which would have held the owner’s sword. Swords were not commonly wielded by the lower classes, so this would have almost certainly belonged to an officer, or at least a wealthy mercenary, of which we know there were several on board when the Mary Rose sank.
