Shot gauge

83A0019

This oak shot gauge is one of three ‘paddle-shaped’ examples recovered from the Mary Rose. It was used to measure shot, ensuring that the right sized shot was brought to the correct sized gun.

It has a hole diameter of 100mm, suggesting that it may have been used for either a demi culverin (with a bore up to 150mm) or a fowler (bore between 110-128mm). As none of the guns on the Mary Rose take a shot of 100mm it may be that the gun it was made for was recovered before the 20th century salvage operations.
