This quill was found on the upper deck of the Mary Rose, at the stern of the hull, where the officers’ quarters were likely to have been situated.
The scarcity of these items is understandable; as well as being fragile, and as such less likely to be preserved, small, light and buoyant, and as such more likely to float away post-sinking, the majority of the crew would have been illiterate, and so would have had no need of quills.
