This lifting lug, or “dolphin”, is on a demi cannon recovered from the aft part of the main deck of the Mary Rose.
Like most of the lifting lugs on the bronze guns of the Mary Rose, this one depicts a Lion, its open maw allowing ropes to be strung through to aid in the lifting of the gun for loading onto the ship or carriage maintenance.
This gun was made by John and Robert Owen in 1542.
