This leather thigh boot was found in the hold of the Mary Rose. It appears to have been lined, with a leather top lining and at least two different fabrics. It still has its bootstraps attached, allowing it to be pulled on with ease.
Other similar boots have a layer of straw sewn into the sole, to provide comfort and warmth. It also lacks a raised heel and is not made for a specific foot, so it can be worn on either. Nine pairs of thigh boots were recovered in total, with approximately 425 shoes and boots in total recovered. Taking into account the number of crew members believed to be on board, this represents about 46% of the crew’s footwear.
