Granite shot

81A1387

While 387 stone shot were recovered from the Mary Rose, this is the only granite shot found, and this has led some experts to suggest that it may be more than just another piece of shot.

It is made of muscovite granite, which can be found in Brittany and the Channel Islands. This may mean that the shot was not from the Mary Rose, but rather the ship that shot her. It has been suggested that the French may have holed the Mary Rose below the waterline, and she sank during a manoeuvre to ground her.

What this theory does not consider is that the stone can also be found in Devon and Cornwall, and that the shot was found within a shot locker. This is one of many reasons why we do not accept this theory as being likely.
