Surgeon’s mallet

80A1743

This mallet (made of elm with an oak handle) was found in the Barber Surgeon’s chest on the Mary Rose.

It was probably used for small amputations, used with a chisel and block to remove damaged fingers and toes, but may also have been used to treat bone ulcers and for tooth removal. One thing it certainly wasn’t used for was knocking people out. Trying to knock someone out with a mallet is more likely to kill them than put them to sleep.
