Ladle

82A3065

This wooden ladle was recovered from the hold area of the Mary Rose. It was used to stir and recover food from the large brass cauldrons built into the top of the galley ovens.

While we only found this with a rather short rectangular handle, made from the same piece of timber, it would have had a longer, more practical one attached. Having been made, at least internally, on a lathe, it was easier to produce with a short handle!

Experimental archaeology suggests the handle may have been around a metre (3ft) in length.
