Working with creatives Linda Mason and Ricky Tart, Portsmouth Festivities is enabling Young Carers aged 11-18 to collaborate with the artists over three months of workshops and creating artistic interpretations of the sinking of the Mary Rose which will feature in an exhibition.

With the support received from the National Lottery players the creative workshops will take place at the Portsmouth Carers Centre Young Carers Clubs, as well the young people will have multiple opportunities to visit the museum and learn about heritage conservation from the Mary Rose Trust. The artists will facilitate the young carers to produce art works using techniques e.g. animation, still capture, soundscapes and poetry to be exhibited in the Mary Rose Museum for ten days in June 2020 as part of the annual Portsmouth Festivities.

“Our festival is all about the community and so we are very passionate to continue our work with the Young Carers. This is their time for them, to create, have fun and learn new creative skills. The exhibition is going to be a great addition to the museum and to our festival” said Festival Director Erica Smith

The Mary Rose is more than just a shipwreck – it is important to the City of Portsmouth as a symbol of both the city’s maritime history and England’s. The Mary Rose sank at the Battle of the Solent in Henry VIII’s third French War of 1545 after over thirty years of active service. She was the only English ship lost in the battle and only 35 people survived.

Submerged the exhibition will be on 12-21st June at The Mary Rose.
