Retail Team Member

The Mary Rose is currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic Retail Team Member to join our crew. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals with an interest in working in a fast paced and unique environment, with a background and good experience working in retail.

The Mary Rose is one of the top attractions in Hampshire, and is a large visitor attraction which receives over 350,000 visitors a year.

We are looking to recruit someone with excellent retail skills, with a keen understanding and experience in using till systems and back of house EPOS systems.

The successful candidate will also have skills such as upselling, merchandising, and excellent customer service and engagement skills. You will be joining a dedicated retail team, with a focus on providing world class customer service to all our visitors.

Key qualities:

  • Range of existing retail skills – must have competent tech skills and experience using various EPOS systems
  • Team Player – able to work with a mix of individuals
  • Independent worker – the ability to complete tasks alone and use initiate
  • Flexibility and adaptability – able to work in a busy, changeable environment, take direction and communicate well
  • Enthusiasm and can do attitude – with a positive outlook and dedication to the role
  • Able to work in a busy retail space – managing customer queues, queries, taking deliveries, stocking up and assisting the rest of the museum team when needed

Necessary for the role:

  • Ability to work week days and weekends
  • Able to work flexible shifts times
  • Ability to work during school holidays and term time
  • Retail experience, including good knowledge of EPOS Systems both till facing and back of house, and have experience taking part in stock take

This role will include three weekday shifts, working from 9am – 5:45pm, and some weekend work. The successful candidate will be offered a 3.5 day contract, with the ability to book additional shifts.

Wage: £8.74 per hour

Volunteering

Museum volunteer

 

Working within the galleries, you will engage and support a diverse range of visitors, sharing facts about the ship and its collection and helping to bring the museum experience to life.  You will also have the opportunity to volunteer alongside our Events Team and support our Learning Centre Team.

As part of our training scheme you will undergo an initial induction, shadow an existing volunteer, and full support and ongoing training will also be provided.

Visitor Engagement Volunteers

 

Working within the galleries, you will engage and support a diverse range of visitors, sharing facts about the ship and its collection and helping to bring the museum experience to life.  You will also have the opportunity to work alongside our Events Team assisting to set up events and conducting guided tours throughout the Museum. 

As part of our training scheme you will undergo an initial induction, shadow an existing volunteer, and full support and ongoing training will also be provided.

Interpretation Volunteers

 

Working within the galleries, you will engage and support a diverse range of visitors, sharing facts about the ship and its collection and helping to bring the museum experience to life.  You will also have the opportunity to work support our Learning Centre Team by working alongside them to implement the learning programme which would include:

  • Interacting with school groups and inspiring pupils and teachers
  • Ability to react to the museums needs and changing programme if necessary
  • Confidence in orientating, supporting and managing groups of children in a busy museum setting.

As part of our training scheme you will undergo an initial induction, shadow an existing volunteer, and full support and ongoing training will also be provided.

Welcome Volunteers

 

Work alongside our friendly Guest Relations Team at the entrance to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, you will meet and greet visitors and engage with them in making the most of their visit, including signposting to what is on that day.  You will also have the opportunity to assist with manning the information desk.

As part of our training scheme you will undergo an initial induction and full support and ongoing training will also be provided.

Buggy Driver

 

We are currently recruiting a number of new Volunteer Buggy Drivers to assist those with mobility needs by driving between the entrance of the Historic Dockyard and the Mary Rose.  As a member of our team, full training will be provided.

One of our regular drivers had the following to say about driving the buggy: -

‘I had recently retired and was looking for an interest to fill my time.  I volunteer for the Mary Rose Museum as a buggy driver two days a week days.  It has given me the opportunity to meet visitors from all over the World and all walks of life.  I love to chat to them and listen to their enthusiasm regarding their Mary Rose experience.’

If you are over the age of 21, hold a full, clean driving licence, interested in volunteering at the Mary Rose and available from 09:45am-17:30 for at least one day each week, we would love to hear from you.
