Chief Operating Officer

Permanent, full time

The Mary Rose has attracted over 1.7m visitors since 2013 and is now working towards becoming a ‘Must Experience British Icon’. An exemplar of good practice across areas such as visitor experience, learning, interpretation and research, the Trust now seeks to drive the next stage of innovation and product development to safeguard Mary Rose for future generations.

Reporting to the CEO and operating as part of the Senior Leadership Team, the new role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be responsible for developing and driving forward a customer centred and commercially driven organisation, leading and managing the team responsible

Responsible for

  • Joining up Mary Rose front of house and back of house operations, to deliver the best possible experience for the visitor and to optimise financial contribution for the Trust’s work.
  • Driving ticket sales to domestic and international visitors, as well as group sales. Maximising secondary spend is crucial, as is driving the Events & Functions business and developing new income streams.
  • Working closely with Operations and Curatorial team, the COO will ensure delivery of strong seasonal programming to appeal to key audiences, as well as working with the CEO/Curatorial Team to develop longer term vision for initiatives to refresh the exhibition offer.
  • The COO is responsible for operational efficiency (including financial, systems and processes), as well as optimising profitability across the Trust’s business.



Facility Maintenance Officer

Salary: £20-£22k

Hours: 37 Hours per week (permanent)


The Mary Rose Museum is the leading museum for Maritime Archaeology in the UK.  The Mary Rose Trust’s aims are to conserve the Mary Rose and her artefacts, maintain the archives, enable lifelong learning and outreach and become self-sustaining through income generation.  Located within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the Museum has received fantastic visitor reviews and a number of prestigious awards.

MRT is looking to appoint a Facility Maintenance Officer to work with the Maintenance Team.. You should have demonstrable relevant experience in a similar role, with the key area of responsibility being to deliver a high standard of facilities maintenance across the Trust buildings to ensure a first class and safe working and visiting environment for staff and the public.

To make a success of this role, you need to be self-motivated, flexible and take pride in your work.  You will also need to be a good communicator, polite and helpful as you will be working with a variety of teams outside your immediate department.

Buggy Driver


We are currently recruiting a number of new Volunteer Buggy Drivers to assist those with mobility needs by driving between the entrance of the Historic Dockyard and the Mary Rose.  As a member of our team, full training will be provided.

One of our regular drivers had the following to say about driving the buggy: -

‘I had recently retired and was looking for an interest to fill my time.  I volunteer for the Mary Rose Museum as a buggy driver two days a week days.  It has given me the opportunity to meet visitors from all over the World and all walks of life.  I love to chat to them and listen to their enthusiasm regarding their Mary Rose experience.’

If you are over the age of 21, hold a full, clean driving licence, interested in volunteering at the Mary Rose and available from 09:45am-17:30 for at least one day each week, we would love to hear from you.

Welcome Volunteers


Work alongside our friendly Guest Relations Team at the entrance to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, you will meet and greet visitors and engage with them in making the most of their visit, including signposting to what is on that day.  You will also have the opportunity to assist with manning the information desk.

As part of our training scheme you will undergo an initial induction and full support and ongoing training will also be provided.
