Evidence in Action: A Tudor Case Study

This session considers the life of the Mary Rose and the continuing mystery of why she sank. Pupils examine a variety of sources of evidence, including paintings and documents. This gives rise to a discussion on the reliability of evidence and how we interpret sources which helps develop essential historical skills. The second part of the workshop involves hands-on work in small groups. Pupils are challenged to identify mystery replica objects including personal and professional items from the ship.

History of Medicine (KS3 Enrichment)

Pupils are invited to investigate evidence from the Mary Rose including the Barber – Surgeon’s tools and human remains.  They will have the opportunity to take on the role of the Barber–Surgeon and his patients using replica objects to demonstrate a range of treatments that were available at the time.  The search is on for the Barber–Surgeon’s new apprentice!

GCSE Schools History Project – History of Medicine (2 hours)

This session provides a case study for medical knowledge during the Medical Renaissance.  A mixture of hands–on activities, source work and role–play challenges pupils’ assumptions about Tudor medical skills and knowledge.  This workshop is suitable as an introduction to the topic or as part of exam revision. An exam practice question based on the Mary Rose collection is available to discuss during the session or complete back at school.

Leisure and Tourism or Travel and Tourism (Half day)

Practical sessions enable students to gain an insight into a world-famous heritage attraction.  Our focus is on customer service and welcoming visitors with a variety of special needs. Students are encouraged to find information for themselves in the Museum and use this as a basis for discussion and role-play activities.
