The
strong sweet wines were easier to handle and kept better than weaker wine.
They also cost a lot more. The King made a lot of money on the custom's duty on wine, so the trade was tightly controlled. Spiced wine was very popular. This had spices like ginger, cloves and nutmeg in it, and a lot of sugar. It was sometimes served warm, just like mulled wine is today.
